Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist that completed an advanced education program after dental school in order to learn to diagnose, prevent, and treat dental and facial irregularities.

At what age should I see an orthodontist?

The American Dental Association recommends that the first orthodontic visit take place at age 7 (or earlier if a problem is detected by the child’s parents, dentist, or physician).  Most children at that age will not require treatment, but there are conditions such as cross- bite, under-bites, overbites, or harmful oral habits that can be best treated at a young age.

Comprehensive, or Phase II treatment, involves full braces and usually takes place when all of the permanent teeth have erupted.  This is usually between ages eleven and thirteen.

Do many adults get braces?

Patients of all ages can get braces.  Everyone likes a beautiful smile, regardless of their age, and many orthodontic patients today are adults.

How long will I have to wear braces?

It depends of the treatment necessary.  Some treatments take as little as 6 months, while others can require several years.  The average treatment time is 24 months.

Do braces hurt?

Placing the braces on your teeth does not hurt.  However, after the braces are placed you may feel some soreness for two to four days.  Your lips and cheeks will need about a week to get used to the braces.

Can I still play sports?

Yes!  I definitely recommend wearing a mouthguard while participating in sports.  They are very inexpensive.

Can I still play my instrument?

Yes!  However,  you may have a short period af adjustment while you get used to the braces.  Brace covers or wax can be used to help with any initial discomfort.

Do I still see my dentist while I have my braces?

Definitely.  Continue to see your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups every six months while in braces.

What foods do I avoid with braces?

For most situations, common sense will tell you what to avoid.  Hard foods, sticky foods, and foods high in sugar must be avoided.  Hard foods like hard candy or nuts can break wires and brackets.  Sticky foods like taffy or caramels can loosen bands and get stuck under wires.  Cut down on sugary foods.  They can cause decay.  Nail biting, pencil and pen chewing or chewing on other non-food items should be avoided.
